Dark vs. Light: 'Star Wars' fans storm social media with dueling 'Last Jedi' opinions

Spoiler alert! This post contains big spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Seriously, get out of here now if you don’t want to know what happens.

The critical response to The Last Jedi has been overwhelmingly positive, with reviews lauding the film for — among other things — deviating from the Star Wars norm.

Audiences online, though, haven’t been quite so enamored of the movie. As Mashable reported earlier this week, the gap between Rotten Tomatoes scores from critics vs. those from moviegoers was, at one point, a whopping 37 percent.

So what are fans taking issue with that critics aren’t? A quick look at Twitter tells us that some people just didn’t think the movie felt like Star Wars. One of the biggest points of contention was Luke’s cynicism — would the Luke we know and love really reject the Jedi the way he does in the film?

Luke in Return of The Jedi: saved his father who is arguably the most evil man in the galaxy because he saw good in him.

Luke in The Last Jedi: was fearful of a kid with a little dark in him.

The Last Jedi: Saw it twice now. Had to see it again cause the story seemed so flawed, like WTF is going on. Will not see it again. Luke short-changed like an old man that gets put in a nursing home 4 people to go see. Kylo Ren is left as the 1 to hold down 9. WTF

Problem with Last Jedi is how they misused Luke. They made him weak, scared and that was Disney’s doing. I don’t fault Mark for that. Smoke should have lived & Luke too. Then Luke at the very end tells him, “I’m coming for you.”

Other fans, though, are arguing that to be so attached to Original Trilogy Luke is to miss the point of the movie. In the end, after all, the Jedi as we know them must be forgotten — a new generation of heroes are primed to take their place.

Okay, some not spoiler thoughts about #LastJedi after my second viewing:

– Love it.
– Rey is awesome.
– Kylo Ren is super compelling and one of the best characters in the new storyline.
– Luke. Dude.
– Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and Mark Hamill are phenomenal

The Last Jedi is a superbly emotive & resonate story about destroying the past to create hope for the future. There is so much good in the film and it feels new. It also has the most gasp-inducing beautiful shot in all of Star Wars.

The biggest most obvious point in The Last Jedi is the lesson of letting go of the past and moving forward. A lot of folks who didn’t like the movie probably can’t let go of the old series.

Still, it’s too early to tell what place The Last Jedi will ultimately take in the franchise’s history. To be fair, the movie just came out, and a lot of fans are probably really surprised. Things like Luke’s role and Snoke’s anticlimactic death challenge what many thought was going to be the central conflict of the trilogy. 

But it’s easy to get mad about that stuff when it’s fresh and you’re still shocked. The eventual verdict from fans will likely change as the days go by and the new Star Wars becomes the norm.

In the meantime, at least there’s one thing we can all agree on: porgs are good.
