A new year means new streaming options on HBO. Though you’re probably planning to spend as much time possible tackling your resolutions, given the cold weather, we’re sure you’ll find yourself spending at least a little time inside, getting use out of your HBO subscription. As usual, January will bring new episodes of popular shows, as well as hit movies, to HBO.
On the series front, the premium network launches the second seasons of three of its most popular comedies. Crashing, a show about a stand-up comic who couch surfs among New York’s most prominent comedians, will launch its second season the same day as break-up-driven comedy Divorce, with popular marijuana dealer comedy High Maintenance starting its new run just a few days later. The premium cable company will also launch Mosaic, a six-part miniseries from director Steven Soderbergh that centers on love and murder in a small town.
In terms of feature-length content, two musician-based documentaries take center stage at the beginning of the new year, with David Bowie: The Last Five Years and May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers sure to enthrall longtime listeners of both. Other films worth watching include the entire original Back To The Future and Harry Potter franchises, as well as Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me and The Fate of the Furious.
As always, each passing month means some titles move from HBO’s inventory into the realms of memory and Blu-ray purchases (or onto other streaming platforms). Before January comes to a close, be sure to watch films like Catch Me If You Can and Frost/Nixon.
Read on for our list of the best new titles coming to HBO, and scroll on to the second page to see what’s going away. (Bolded titles signify films and shows we recommend.) Interested in what’s on other streaming services? Be sure to check out what’s new on Amazon Prime and what’s new on Netflix.
