Christmas Inheritance is a cheesy monstrosity, and I’ll probably watch it at least two more times before the end of the year.
Let’s back up: It’s been, to put it mildly, a rough year.
So it’s no surprise that your timeline may be — even moreso than usual — decked out with people happily freaking out about cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies, something nice to relax to for a moment as the world burns. (Vox has a good breakdown on the growing cult of Hallmark.)
Anyway, this year Netflix decided to get in on the fun as well and released two of their own in the style of Hallmark*: A Christmas Prince, which you’ve probably heard about because Netflix burned their own users for watching it, and Christmas Inheritance, which dropped this past weekend.
They both are trope city, but actually quite different. A Christmas Prince combines the best some of the parts of other films, like Princess Diaries, The Prince & Me and more for a totally unbelievable, cheesy royal-falls-in-love-with-a-commoner rom-com extravaganza. Christmas Inheritance, on the other hand, leans hard into the whole “big city gal heads to a small town for the first time and learns it’s important to be kind!” plot that is Hallmark’s bread and butter. It is a smidgen more realistic.
Unless you’re a total monster like me, you probably only need to watch one to get your fix of earnest Christmas goofs this weekend. Which one is right for you?
I’m so glad you asked.
Both are streaming on Netflix now. Make yourself a drink and dive in.
*Netflix also released El Camino Christmas, but as that isn’t a cheesy rom-com, I’m not even considering it.
