Top 10 employers hiring AI talent in 2018

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been touted to be the next big creator of jobs worldwide. When it comes to the future of work, AI and automation are poised to impact nearly every facet of the workforce in some way, as per Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist at careers site Glassdoor. “These technologies are being used for popular services like customer service chatbots at Bank of America, easy-to-search images on Facebook, and even automated fashion suggestions for apparel shoppers on Amazon,” he adds.

Today, AI is being used to automate things we do at work, to perform tasks automatically that was previously done by a person. There are various jobs in the field such as AI software engineer, AI research scientist, AI product manager and AI technical sales, among others. There are also some that go beyond the strong technical roles such as AI copywriters, attorney, UX designers for AI, and even AI journalists.

However, there’s a staggering talent shortage – fewer than 10,000 people in the world have the skill set to conduct important AI research, according to technology and consulting firm Element AI. The shortage has driven salaries sky-high: AI specialists reportedly fetch compensation of $300,000 to $500,000. So, who are the biggest players in this race for talent? Glassdoor recently released a list of the top employers seeking AI expertise. Here are a few of them:

Amazon

Amazon takes the top spot, with 64 AI-related job postings, more than double the number-two company on the list. In a job description for an “AI specialist solutions architect,” Amazon says it has been investing in artificial intelligence for 20 years, using it to recommend items to Amazon.com customers, map routes for robots in fulfillment warehouses and recognise speech for its Alexa-powered products. The AI solutions architect role Amazon is recruiting for will work in the Amazon Web Services unit, which helps companies scale their technological operations.

Nvidia

Nvidia takes second place, with 31 AI openings on Glassdoor. The company has had quite a run over the past two years – its stock has risen six-fold because it sells computer chips that power AI applications, and demand is incredibly high. One of Nvidia’s openings is an “AI developer technology engineer,” a role that requires either a PhD or a master’s degree plus three years’ relevant experience.

 

Microsoft

Microsoft ranks third on the list, with 18 AI openings on Glassdoor. There’s been an influx of jobs related to AI at Microsoft. An “artificial intelligence” keyword search on the company’s career page brings up 469 results (and that’s in the US alone). Interestingly, they are not all technical roles. A quick skim of the most recent positions shows openings for a financial analyst in the artificial intelligence and research division and another role for an attorney focused on artificial intelligence solutions.

 

IBM

IBM ranks fourth on Glassdoor’s list, with 17 openings for AI jobs. The company is building a new consulting practice focused on AI and automation, according to a job description for an “Associate Partner – Applied AI Automation Strategy”. IBM aims to help organisations improve their business models, job functions and customer interactions using AI.

 

Accenture

Accenture takes the fifth spot, with 14 AI-related job postings. Recently, the company’s innovation chief Paul Daugherty said that he believed there was “tremendous substance” behind the hype around AI. “We’ve never seen a technology that’s moved as fast as AI has to impact business and society. We believe this is by far the fastest-moving technology we’ve ever tracked, and we’re just getting started,” he added.

 

Facebook

Facebook ranks sixth on Glassdoor’s list, with 12 openings for AI jobs. The social networking giant has already placed huge bets on AI. Recently, it officially announced the opening of an artificial intelligence research lab in Montreal. This is Facebook’s fourth AI research lab, after Menlo Park, Calif.; New York; and Paris.

 

Intel

Intel shares the sixth spot with Facebook, with 12 AI-related job postings. In August, the US chip maker paid more than $400m for Nervana, a three-year-old startup that is developing specialised AI systems ranging from software to chips.

 

Samsung

Samsung ranks eighth on Glassdoor’s list, with 10 openings for AI jobs. The Korean electronics giant is already betting big on its Bixby AI service to make devices easier to use.

 

Lenovo

Lenovo takes the ninth spot, with 9 AI-related job postings. It has already announced new hardware and software for firms building machine-learning systems, as the Chinese tech giant doubles down on AI. It expects firms will increasingly rely on AI systems to make rapid decisions based on the vast amount of data being generated, predicting 44 trillion gigabytes of data will exist by 2020.

 

Adobe

Adobe ranks tenth on Glassdoor’s list, with 8 openings for AI jobs. Advances in artificial intelligence are making it easier than ever to seamlessly edit and manipulate photos and images and Adobe is taking full advantage of it. The company recently showed off some prototype AI tools at its annual MAX conference. They’re all being developed by the company’s Sensei unit – a machine learning division that’s previously showed off a voice-activated Photoshop assistant and an automatic selfie tweaker
