The Indian IT industry has seen a spate of layoffs in the last one year, shattering the lives of many IT professionals. The industry, which is considered to be the country’s largest employer giving as many as 40 lakh jobs directly, has witnessed massive downsizing in recent times. However, the government had earlier dismissed reports of large-scale job losses and said that the talk about job decline in the IT sector was motivated and factually incorrect. As the current situation gives a mixed reaction from the government and tech professionals, we, at TechGig, tried to assess the situation with the help of an exclusive survey. The survey was based on the inputs taken from a database of more than 2 lakh IT professionals from the top metro cities across India.
It’s a known fact that companies don’t generally prefer to declare layoffs publicly, as they tarnish their public image and give a reason for competitors to cheer about. And therefore, it’s difficult to get a collective data on the number of people who lost their jobs in the IT industry. To get a thorough consensus, we asked our respondents if they personally knew someone in the sector, who was asked to leave the organisation in past six months. The answer was surprising, as almost 68 per cent of the respondents expressed that they personally knew people who were asked to leave their respective organisations. This somehow conveys that layoffs are not a myth and it’s happening in most IT companies.
