80% Indian jobs can be outsourced to freelancers

As many as 80% of jobs in India can be outsourced to the freelancers in the country. The study also suggests that the companies, however, are reluctant to hire freelancers for the same jobs.

The joint study by ICRIER and LIRNEasia, the research firms have published based on collective inputs from 1,976 respondents. The study published today reads, “Indian companies are still unwilling to see the benefits of outsourcing to freelancers. Freelancing platforms state that around 70-80 percent of jobs in the country could be potentially outsourced given the right infrastructure.”

The study titled, ‘The Potential and Challenges for Online Freelancing and Microwork in India’ covers the wide community of freelancers in the country. The research firms covered 1,976 respondents with diverse backgrounds such as students and non-students. The survey respondents are from the different geographical locations with the majority of them being from Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana. 

Majority of the freelancers believe that they are treated as ‘second grade’ by the organizations as compared to the professionals having full-time positions. With the growing opportunities for freelancers in the global market, the findings of this study come as a surprise. The potential for some of the mundane tasks to be outsourced continues to be high in the country. 

Millennials around the world are settling for flexible jobs over permanent positions. The flexibility of working from home and delivering the best possible productivity are the major reasons behind this. On the other hand, organizations can adapt to a flexible cost-structure for the best talent by outsourcing traditional tasks to the freelancers.

According to K P Krishnan, the Secretary of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry, the reason behind the rapidly business environment in the country are mainly technology, employment patterns, and organizations. There is a demand for the best talent by the organizations but at the same time, they struggle to hire the same due to the changing dynamics of business.

Rajat Kathuria, the Director of ICRIER said, “There is a need to build awareness and correct perceptions, indeed prejudices related to microwork and online freelancing in India. The traditional mindset that privileges full-time employment over freelancing is a hard nut to crack.” The study highlights that the stability and security of traditional 9 am to 5 pm jobs is still considered superior by the employers and employees alike.

LIRNEasia CEO Helani Galpaya said, “We find that online freelancing is a solution to underemployment, where people who are already working are using it to make additional and much-needed income. For many women who are stay-at-home mothers, it was seen as an opportunity to make at least a little bit of money independently, without having to ask her husband for money.”

The availability of diverse talent in the country makes India a perfect market to create this type of work for job seekers. Freelancers need to follow the formula of re-skilling and upskilling in order to retain the freelance contracts. With the changing business dynamics, companies are likely to create more opportunities for freelancers in the coming years.
