Best new shows and movies to stream: ‘Logan,’ ‘Wormwood,’ and more

Online streaming is bigger than ever, and with so many streaming services adding new shows and movies every week, it can be nearly impossible to sort through the good and the bad. If you need something to watch and don’t want to wade through the digital muck that washes up on the internet’s shores, follow our picks below for the best new shows and movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon, and other services.

On the list this week: Wolverine’s last stand, a CIA conspiracy, and more.

‘Logan’

Who could have imagined that the disastrous X-Men Origins: Wolverine would lead to a film as profound as Logan. Based on the superb comic series Old Man Logan, the film is set in 2029. It’s been decades since any mutants have been born, and their population has dwindled to the point of near extinction. Logan (Hugh Jackman), aka Wolverine, lives in hiding, taking care of Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), who suffers from seizures and is losing his memory. Weary of action, and with his healing ability diminishing, Logan is resigned to carrying out his days in seclusion — until he comes in contact with a young mutant named Laura (Dafne Keen), who has the same powers as Logan. To protect the girl, Logan unsheathes his claws for one last fight. Essentially a grim Western set in the X-Men universe, Logan is a brutal, beautiful final chapter for its grizzled hero.

Over the course of its four seasons, AMC’s acclaimed drama Halt and Catch Fire followed the growth of the computer industry through the eyes of people working in it, a collection of complicated characters with their own agendas. Although the first season was a bit drab, the show grew by leaps and bounds. By season 4 — which takes places in the ‘90s as the internet is exploding — the characters have developed a tangled history that informs all their actions. Beautifully filmed and written, Halt and Catch Fire is a powerful drama about the origins of our modern, computer-driven society.

‘Nightcrawler’

Crime pays, particularly when it’s violent, as Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) learns in this slimy thriller about the seedy world of crime scene photography. After serving a stint for theft, Bloom tries to make an honest living, and a chance encounter introduces him to the life of nightcrawlers, who take video of violent incidents and sell the footage to local news stations. To raise the value of his footage, Lou and his protégé, Rick (Riz Ahmed), engage in some risky (and unethical) business. Nightcrawler is a slick crime movie, and Gyllenhaal delivers a tremendous performance.

‘Wormwood’

Documentary filmmaker Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line) tackles one of his most bizarre subjects yet in this six-part docudrama series. The subject is the death of U.S. Army scientist Frank Olson, who died after apparently jumping from the window of an apartment. As it turns out, Olson was connected to the CIA, and to its Project MKUltra experiments, which involved testing chemicals (including LSD) on subjects, some unwittingly. In a twist, CIA documents revealed that a member of the agency had slipped LSD into Olson’s drink at one point. Wormwood explores the mystery surrounding Olson’s death, using a mix of interviews, archival footage, and dramatic reenactments.

‘Heaven’s Gate’

best new shows and movies to stream 2 heavens gate

After his Academy Award-winning Vietnam drama The Deer Hunter, Michael Cimino went big — too big, some might argue — with Heaven’s Gate, a sprawling, epic Western that ran wildly over-budget and, some say, ended the director-driven New Hollywood era. Set in the 1890s in Wyoming, Heaven’s Gate is a fictionalized account of the Johnson County War. The film follows a marshal named Jim Averill (Kris Kristofferson), who arrives in Wyoming to find a class war brewing. European immigrants, poor and starving, have turned to cattle wrangling to survive, angering the wealthy cattle barons. As the tensions rise, blood soaks the ground of Johnson County. Heaven’s Gate is an ambitious Western, and despite its failure at the box office, is well worth watching.
